The item was received in a cardboard box, within was the items retail packaging. Most of this was able to be recycled.

About our PC

WoW, i can’t believe this price, your getting a top class product which is so capable of performing all but the most demanding of tasks. The form factor is a mini size, it can be attached to the back of your monitor or just left sitting on your desk next to it. It’s permanently expandable with the addition of up to 2 TB of 2.5 inch SDD or HDD fitted in the base module. The Windows 10 pro is a great operating system, it’s very stable and regularly updated by Microsoft. Plus all this connectivity makes it an ideal second PC for the kids school work, a home office or the lounge multi media centre.

This version is ideally suited to those who require the extra features the (Electronically Licensed) Windows 10 Pro version affords. Like windows Defender and Remote Backups to a network location, there’s also a 30 Day trial of Microsoft Office. I find it great for my Network Backup Drive. Yet, it would be just as flexible in the workplace. Offices, Shops (epos), accounting or running a restaurant bookings system. Being so cheap to run, you’ll save a fortune on energy costs too.

Let’s take a look in more detail.

The CPU (Central Processor Unit)

The heart of this machine is inhabited by an Intel® Celeron® Processor, the J3455  (Formerly Intel Apollo Lake Celeron Processor). Released on 30/8/2016. This 14nm Lithographic wonder is Quad Core and offers the latest Multi-Threading Technology. It’s base operating frequency  1.50 GHz/s rising to a 2.30 in burst mode. Coming equipped with 2Mb of on board cache, this chip is capable of processing more than  12.8 GB/s of data to and from the memory.

The GPU (Graphical Processing Unit)

Onboard our CPU is the Integrated Intel HD Graphics 500: 12 EUs inside (Up to 750MHz) with 2GB’s VRAM built in, it’s the . It has a base frequency of 200 rising to a burst/max dynamic frequency of 500 MHz. This GPU can handle Multi-Threading, processing 12 operations at a time and outputting 4K or HD video to the HDMI and USB-C ports..

The RAM (Random Access Memory)

Under the hood, we have 4GB’s of DDR3L SDRAM running at 1600MHz. DDR3L RAM uses a lover voltage to the standard DDR3 RAM. This reduces heat and in theory should make it that little bit faster. Your standard DDR3 RAM runs on 1.5 volts where DDR3L runs on 1.35 volts. So the shift from zero to the one state, should take less time as the voltage only needs to climb up to 1.35 as opposed to 1.5. This also helps the system to conserve energy.

Internal Storage (eMMC 5.0)

Within our mini PC we have 32GB of eMMC 5.0 (Embedded Multi-Media Card) storage. This level 5.0 Flash Storage has now been elevated to a similar status as 2.5 inch SSD’s. Making this a very versatile product, with excellent response times for end users. eMMC uses an 8 bit parallel connected interface and operates in half-duplex mode (the 8 bit connection can be used to send or receive data, but not simultaneously). The 5.0 version of the eMMC Flash can deliver a sequential read performance of 250 MB/s.


As mentioned above, this Mini PC comes with it’s own USP (Unique Selling Point). You can add to the usable storage space, with an SDD or HDD in the base unit beneath the computer. Up to 2TB of a 2.5 inch form factor drive, can be easily installed without any technical know-how. This changes everything. Apart from the more graphically demanding of tasks, you have a fully functioning stand alone PC.


You have the latest wireless connectivity in the ACEPC AK1, with 802.11ac Dual Band 2.4 & 5GHz Wi-Fi. It offers speeds of up to 450Mbps on the 2.4GHz band & 1300Mbps on the 5GHz. Of course this is dependant on many factors (Broadband Speed, Router, Environment etc…). But if you have the ability, use the Ethernet connection. It’s always the more stable and fastest with Gigabit Speeds.

We also have Bluetooth. (Bluetooth is a wireless technology standard for exchanging data over short distances). Ours is in the form of version 4.0 (also called Bluetooth Smart), this is great for this Low Energy device. The general improvements in version 4.0 over older versions include the changes necessary to facilitate BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) modes, as well the GATT (Generic Attribute Profile) and SM (Security Manager)  services with AES Encryption. The Operating System (Windows 10 Pro)

The Windows 10 Pro offers a multitude of extras aimed mainly at commerce and industry, but home users too, will find a lot of the features useful. Such as Bitlocker, an encryption software that offers the option to encrypt the Windows boot drive and other fixed drives within the system, as well as USB keys and external drives. Network Drive (NAS) Access, i use this to access my music and video’s form my iTunes collection. I also use NAS for backup purposes.

Video Output

We have two options here HDMI or USB-c suppling 4K Ultra HD & 1080P HD. This gives you the choice if you connecting to a Large Screen/Monitor,  then you may feel that 4K @ 60fps is the better choice, that’s really impressive from such a small quiet box.

Audio Input/Output

Mic Input and Headphone output are done through a single 3.5mm socket, this will be in Stereo format. Output of audio to devices is sent through HDMI or USB-C. (Depending on the input source, the HDMI will be capable of outputting a 7.1 surround sound signal). The quality of audio is very good.

Peripheral Interfaces

There are 2 x USB 2.0 sockets which have a data transfer capability of 480 Mbit/s. The power handling capacity of each is 2.5 watts or 500 mA. 2 x USB 3.0 socket offers a data handling capacity of 5 Gbit/s. They have a power handling capacity of 4.5 watts or 900 mA.

The USB-C socket has a data handling capacity of 10Gb/s under ideal conditions, the power handling capacity can be 20 volts and 5 Amps. However this is a regulated system which has intelligent monitoring that will regulate the power supplied.

There is also an RJ-45 (Gigabit Ethernet Socket) for those who prefer a wired connection and a TF or Micro SD Card slot (capable of taking a 128Gb card) which can be used to enhance the 32Gb of in built flash storage. We also have a Kensington Locking Point for security.

Power Usage

Finally, a word on power usage. As an example lets look at a call centre running 30 Dell GX620 PC’s (Small form factor 275W). Throughout the day these PC’s will work an average of 9 hours. Each PC will consume 2475 Watts x 30 = 74,250 Watts (or 74.25Kw – 74.25 units of power @ say £0.16p). This is a total bill for PC energy only of £11.88 or £3088.80p a year – that’s just for the PC’s, no lighting.

The ACEPC AK1 uses around 30 Watts (without power drawing peripherals). So this comparison is based on the same conditions, 30 of these working for 9 hours a day. Each ACEPC AK1 will use 30 Watts x 30 = 900 Watts (or 0.9Kw – 0.9 units of power say @ £0.16p). This is a total bill for PC energy only of £0.14.4p or £37.44 a year – that’s just for the ACEPC AK1’s, nothing else.

So using the ACEPC AK1 would save a company with 30 computers £3,051.36p EVERY YEAR. The cost of buying 30 of these would be £5,670.00p. So this cost would be recouped in 1.86 years and then you save £3,051.36 a year, on each floor of a building you have these PC’s on. That’s a lot of money.

In Conclusion

I used to work in an Electrical Distribution Warehouse a few years ago, this was as an Inventory Controller. This machine would have made an ideal Thin Client to use within that type of working environment. It’s ideal for sales, order entry, stock control, dispatch and returns. It would have done us proud. The uses are endless, an EPOS, an info video controller, Signage controller, bookkeeping, Stock control system, all sorts of applications. I can’t praise it enough, it’s secure, smooth running and processes everything throw at it, with the greatest of ease. You won’t get it to play intense games or run video rendering software, but it’s not meant for that sort of thing.

I love this, it’s like the a Tardis. It’s little in size on the outside, but under the base it can be so large (2TB large). It just works so effortlessly too. It’s a true delighted to use and it’s so rightfully earned the 5 out of 5 i’m giving it.
