What are my first impressions?
Wow, i was totally blown away by the attention to detail of the packaging with these headphones. For something firmly in the budget end of the market, they are proudly and beautifully presented. I sliced through the seals on the book like stiff white card box, to unfold the headphones sitting below an Blow moulded clear protective cover. Once lifted away we have our Headphones, 2 extra sizes of Silicone Buds and 2 sizes of Memory Foam Buds all sitting in a white Blow moulded support. Beneath this we have a black Faux Leather drawstring pouch, monogrammed with the HBUDS Logo. An instruction booklet concealed in a white card envelope. The black charging cable and a courtesy card, with registration details and a 10% off coupon.
The Technology Behind the Headphones.
The Bluetooth SIG (Special Interest Group), released Bluetooth 4.1 as an incremental software update to Bluetooth 4.0 on 4 December 2013. This update incorporated the Bluetooth Core Specification Addenda (CSA 1, 2, 3 & 4) in this, new features were added that improve consumer usability. Including increased co-existence support for LTE and bulk data exchange rates.
The Name Bluetooth was borrowed from the 10th-century, second king of Denmark, King Harald Bluetooth; who was famous for uniting Scandinavia just as we intended to unite the PC and cellular industries with a short-range wireless link. Copyright © 2017 IDG Communications, Inc.
EDR (Enhanced Data Rate)
EDR is a part of the Bluetooth specification that allows much faster file transfers. It is an optional part of the Bluetooth spec, and as such is not implemented by all devices. Connections between paired Bluetooth EDR capable devices can reach transfer speeds of over 2Mbps.
Let’s also look at aptX. Qualcomm® aptX™ audio enhances the wireless sound quality of many of the world’s finest smartphones, speakers, soundbars, headphones and tablets. With aptX, music lovers can enjoy wired quality sound – wirelessly. So aptX Low Latency enables high sound quality with Low Power and low latency when transmitted over a Bluetooth connection. Low latency, synchronized audio is vital for video, media and gaming applications. (Qualcomm Website)
Whether you’re at home or out and about, background sounds such as ambient noise, road noise and other people talking can make having a clear-sounding conversation difficult. Qualcomm® cVc™ noise cancellation technology brings advanced audio enhancements and noise suppression to the near and far end, and provides packet loss and bit error concealment. In combination, this delivers the best possible call quality on Bluetooth headsets, handsets, hands-free devices and automotive communication devices. (Qualcomm Website)
Now to the Sound Quality.
Well, i really put them through their paces. Using a Benchmark test and some of my favourite listening tracks. How did they perform, well let’s see.
Please Note:- I am 57 and peoples hearing change as they get older, so this is just the results that i found with my delicate ears. The Headphones were tested with flat equalisation. Tests performed using 24-bit/96kHz FLAC on a FiiO X3 2nd edition.
Frequency response stated:- 20Hz – 20kHz. I found heard frequencies of 20Hz – 10kHz
Spectral Flatness:- Did the Headphones perform with equal volume across a full Spectral frequency sweep. The sound was centred across the full spectrum.
Dynamic Range:- 66 dBFS (decibels below full scale).
Quality Test:- (Bass Shaker) The sweeping tone sounded clear across all frequencies. There was no parasitic buzzing or rattling, sometimes heard in lower priced headphones.
Driver Matching:- (All frequencies swept from 10 Hz up to 10 kHz. at exactly the same sound levels in both earphones) The tone held it’s central position throughout the test.
Correctly wired:- (left plays on left and right on right) Yes.
Polarity Preserved:- (wired in phase) The Headphones are wired correctly.
Binaural Test:- (a knock to a wooden door, first right then left) The Knocks were vivid and lifelike.
Last but not least, I always listen to my favourite music. How does it sound? I know how it usually sounds. (Tracks used for this were as follows)
Izzy Bizu – Talking to you. Adele – Hello. Michael Jackson – She’s out of my life. 10cc – I’m not in love. Michael Jackson – Don’t stop ’til you get enough. A-ha -Hunting high and low. Gwen Guthrie – Ain’t nothin’ going on but the rent. Al Jarreau – Where in this love together. Iona – Here i stand. Patti Austin/Quincy Jones – “Betcha’ Wouldn’t Hurt Me”. Phil Collins – In the air tonight. Pink Floyd – Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Monique Miller – At last. Gino Vannelli – Black and Blue.
Well, how was it?
These headphones punch well above their price point. They sound great. I know they’re only a budget pair of Earphones, but what a budget pair they are. They stand up well to sweat too at IPX7. The Bass is strong and powerful, but not overbearing. The mid-tones are sweet and clear, well defined and warm. The top end was just perfect, not to bright, just well balanced, for this pair of earbuds. Of course, play around with the EQ and all that will change, but for me they are a great set of buds for this low low price.
Both my wife and myself used these to have conversations with friends and nobody noticed we were using a headset. Pam tried them inside and then she went out with them on (there’s a lot of building work going on at the back of our home at the moment), we were both surprised at how clear the call was. This CVC 6.0 really works.
one thing though, make sure you have the right fit on the silicone or memory foam buds themselves, as without that you loose a so much of the tonal quality these have to offer.
What can i say, i could never regret buying these and would be proud to present them as a gift to anyone. They look and sound so much more expensive that the actually are. you will have to hurry though, as at this price they won’t last long.
